Our Classmates

Cathy Maurer (Burati)

Our dear classmate Cathy Maurer Burati passed away on Mar. 26, 2023. Cathy joined our class in third grade.

During her time in high school, she was a member of the Office Aides, Red Cross Club, Ski Club, Spartan Spirit newspaper, and participated in intramural sports.

Her son Ben said, "Some of you may or may not know that my mom had been battling Parkinson's disease for some time now. It first claimed her ability to paint; however, that did not stop her fierce artistic soul, which she poured into her knitting and fiber art for the past decade. That stands to show what a creative force she was."

Here are excerpts from her obituary, which appeared in The Republican newspaper:

Catherine "Cathy" (Maurer) Burati, 70, devoted wife for 51 years to Ronald Burati, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Mar. 26, 2023.

Cathy was born in Enid, OK, the daughter of the late Charles Francis and Arlene (Flanagan) Maurer.

Cathy, a "Polymath," held many jobs in her life, excelling at everything she put her mind to.

She enjoyed knitting, watercolor painting, reading, impressionist art, music, and summer sailing trips on the J&E Riggin. Cathy also enjoyed traveling to her favorite places: Rockport, MA, Rhinebeck, NY, and Rockland, ME.

Most of all, Cathy truly loved her family and close friends. In addition to her husband, Cathy is survived by her two sons, Christopher Burati and partner, Hannah Myett of Brooklyn, NY and Benjamin Burati and his wife, Rebecca Burati of Chicopee, MA; four brothers, Charles F. Maurer, Jr. and his wife Teri, Gary Maurer and his wife, Darlene, Michael Maurer, and Stephen Maurer-Muniz; a granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Cathy's memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, PO Box 4777, New York, NY 10163-4777 or at michaeljfox.org.
