Mountain View School

Some of us went to Mountain View School on Hampden Road for fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. The twenty-room school opened in 1961, with some of us in the fourth grade class.

The six black and white photos below are from a brochure published by the town of East Longmeadow. The students in the photos were sixth graders from the class of 1968, so some of our older brothers and sisters are in these photos.

This photo was taken in the 1961-1962 school year, the first year the school was in operation. Our class was in fourth grade at Mountain View that year. In the lower left is sixth grader Bill Barry (Cathedral High School 1968), the brother of Monica Barry. Next to Bill is Pat McGill (ELHS 1968), the sister of Sue McGill. In the far background is John Picano (ELHS 1968). Next to John may be Debby Kelly. On the right is Sue Mondoux (ELHS 1968), sister of Rich Mondoux. Next to Sue is possibly Scott Roberts (ELHS 1968).

Memories

Donna Anderson remembers, "In fourth grade, near the end of art class, Miss Poirier told us to wash up (we were painting). Sooooo, Kim O'Brien goes to the back of the class to the sink and washes blue paint off his hand. He might have had an itch on his face, because blue paint covered his face. Miss Poirier had a conniption! She yelled at him like I've never seen!!"

Donna also remembers, "In fifth grade, our class was carving blocks of wood to use for printing. Miss Poirier handed out the wood carving tools and said that if anyone cut themselves, she would cancel the whole class. Guess what? My carving tool slipped and I put a deep cut into my finger. I was bleeding really hard, and I didn't want her to see what I had done. I was afraid she'd cancel wood carving and I would be the one to blame. Everyone at my table kept it a secret and I finally got the bleeding to slow down after she left our class. I will never forget the terror!!"
